Knife tips
Today we are going to talk about knives.
Go grab your block of knives (or any that are in your house for that matter) and come read this.
Look at the handle of your knives. Can you actually see the metal going all the way down the handle? There should be little metal pegs that hold the pieces together. that means that if you fully disassemble your knife, the blade would still have a handle. A metal one. THIS IS GOOD!
If the whole handle is just plastic (or whatever) toss it! In MOST cases, this means that the metal actually only goes down less than an inch into the handle. Press down too hard, the blade will separate from the handle and you could lose an eye. No joke.
I see these things returned at the store from broken handles all the time.
So you can still buy cheap knives, just check the handle first!! Could save you ;)

Outdoor Needle-Point
3. Once the frame is assembled, sand it down (or not, whatever) to give it a nice finish
10. Once you get that all finished (days later) spray it down with polyurethane. You will need quite a few coats, and let dry between each coat.

Beer recipes, Honey Ham, and Biscuits
Today's supper:
Wisconsin Beer and Cheese Soup
-------------------------------------------
Paprika and dried Thyme to taste
1 can of beer (I use Miller lite)
4 cups water
4 chicken bouillon cubes
1/2 large onion
4 garlic cloves
1 lb of cheese (I like mild or sharb cheddar, but colby tastes good, too)
1 cup milk
2 tbs butter
1. Get out your crock. I used my 4 qt. (Notice I like the 4 qt for soups?)
2. Throw in the paprika, thyme, beer, water, cubes, milk and butter.
3. Throw the 1/2 onion and garlic into a food processor until it's all finely minced. Toss that in the crock
4. Cut up the cheese into cubes and toss that in.
5. Cook on high for 1 hour. (Sometimes the cheese isn't melted all the way yet, so you can leave it for longer if it's not.)
****DON'T LET THIS SOUP SIT FOR TOO LONG ON HIGH, THE CHEESE WILL CLUMP AND CURDLE. IF YOU NEED TO HAVE IT SIT FOR A WHILE B/C OF A PARTY, USE VELVETTA!!!***
I like to toast up some french bread in the oven and dip that in the soup. Yummy!
Double Beer Brats
----------------------
Made just like regular beer brats, but I buy pre-packaged beer brats and start the whole process.
I used another crock just b/c I don't feel like lifting a finger tonight for supper.
Beer brats
Beer
Water
1. Dump in 2 cans of beer into the crock
2. Add 2 cups of water.
3. Add a pkg. of beer brats and let sit for a few hours.
You can serve it just like that, or pop them onto the grill afterwards. Your choice.
*NOTE* To all those parents who are scolding me for serving up beer foods, if beer is cooked, all the alcohol is cooked out. So don't worry, you're not getting your kids drunk. Anyone from "da Nort'" should know this.
Yesterday's supper:
Biscuits with Sausage Gravy
------------------------------
Country gravy mix
smoked sausage
bakery mix
I use bakery mix instead of doing this from scratch. I cheated. You can cheat further by just buying premade biscuit rolls.
1. Preheat the oven to 450.
2. Biscuits : 3 1/3 cups bakery mix 1 1/4 cup water or milk mix that all up
3. Grease up a pan and lay the biscuit dough all over it.
4. Bake 10 minutes
5. Gravy: I cheated with the mix packet. Make the gravy as directed on the packet. Then add finely chopped smoked sausage.
6. Take the biscuits out of the oven, slice it into squares with a pizza cutter, then dump the gravy all over it.
Honey Ham
--------------
Ham
Honey (hehe, duh)
1. Get out a griddle or a large flat pan. Dump a crazy amount of honey in it. Heat it up
2. Thinly slice your ham. I did mine about 1/4 inch
3. Start frying it up. Make sure to get both sides
Your honey may take a weird reddish color after a while, but don't worry, it's normal. It'll still taste good.
So that's all the recipes that I have for you! I am currently working on my outdoor needlepoint project. It took me 12 hours straight yesterday, and I'm not even halfway finished! I had NO IDEA that it would be this much work! But it is very calming, so I'm not complaining. Once I get it done, hopefully by tomorrow, I will post a how-to. Stay tuned!!

Coming up next...
-Birthday party was fun. My nephew is now 1! Happy Birthday Ethan!
-My daughter got at least SOME sleep in the hotel. Kid vomited in the pool, so we couldn't swim until the morning. Ugh.
-The Brewers took the game against the Cardinals in the 10th inning. Really exciting game!
Anyways, so I'm back at home and waiting for some good weather to finish some projects of mine. Does it seem like I'm always crafting up some project? Yeah, that's because I always am. Either crafting or remodeling. That's my thing.
Anyways, future How-To's:
-Garden Room Divider (needed a craft to get rid of a heap of chicken wire that I happen to have)
-Outdoor Needlework artwork
-Rock Mosiac Wall hanging
-Jazzed up Flower Boxes
Saturday, May 23, 2009
Good-bye for now
Then we are staying at a hotel and going to a Brewer's game on Monday! Yay! It's my first this season. We won't be getting back until late Monday night. So there won't be any new fun things for a few days.
But......I will be sure to bring my camera, so I will definately post pictures as soon as I can!

Silverware Windchime
Thursday, May 21, 2009
Gotta love the West End
APPARENTLY my neighbor doesn't like windchimes. I hung two of them yesterday, and it happened to be a very windy day. My neighbor started staring me down.
I can tell the string was cut. And she's the only person who knew I hung it. I'm just doing the math.
But I will prevail. I just need to go to the thrift store and pick up another saucer. The teacup survived the damage
Anyways, ya know what really scares me? The fact that this woman is a sex offender....and she was IN MY YARD! I think I would have just cause to take a baseball bat to her spine or knees if I EVER caught her in my yard.
So...today:
-Bring Will to dr. appt in a few minutes to get his meds HE NEEDS THEM! (done)
-Pick up his meds, then drop him off at school. (done)
-Pick up neccesities for our trip this weekend to Milwaukee. (done)
-Fix the windchime
-Give Will a haircut
-Give Hailey a bath.
-Start packing for the trip
-Go shopping with my mother-in-law for my nephew's birthday
-Wrap the present
-Find someone to come and let the dog out this weekend
-Go to Will's baseball game
-Watch a movie with the fam

Bundt Cake
I had to work almost all day. I haven't been able to go to church every Sunday because of it, though. So after work, my husband went golfing with a friend, and I got a little bored. So I made a bundt cake!
Yellow Frosted Bundt Cake
----------------------------------
I had cake mix and frosting in the pantry, and ya know how they have the directions for different sized pans on the box? This one happened to also have cooking directions for the bundt form, so it inspired me to bust out the bundt pan.
Cake mix
(ingredients that your cake mix wants)
Frosting
Sprinkles
1. Preheat the oven to whatever. Spray all around the inside of the form. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE CENTER THING!
2. Mix everything up according to the box and pour it in your form.
3. Bake it as long as directed (mine was around 40 minutes)
4. Let it cool. If you greased it properly, it should just fall out when you tip it over. Put it on a plate.
5. Heat up your frosting for 30 seconds (yes, the frosting says not to do this, but if it's more liquidy, then it will keep the form of the cake, and if I was going to make a bundt cake, I wanted it to look like a bundt cake)
6. Pour that all over the cake. You might have to keep spooning stuff off the bottom and putting it on bare spots.
7. Smother it with sprinkles. (my son's suggestion)
8. Pop it in the fridge to re-harden the frosting.
9. Display on a pretty cake plate! (I have a 3-way one from Younkers! A LivingQuarters brand. Pick one up!)
One of these days I'm going to do that from scratch, but I love to keep the boxed stuff around for those times when you just get off of a REALLY long day at work and don't feel like putting in all the extra work.

Get-rid-of-your-old-veggies-soup, instant cream of potato
Soooo....I had to work all day, so I'm really lazy with the supper. But I still wanted to cook.
Then....I noticed that my veggies will be going bad soon. And I have NO MEAT in my house. Nothing. Nadda. So, here's the recipe that I made:
GET RID OF YOUR OLD VEGGIES SOUP
---------------------------------------------
Now, you need to use things that compliment each other. If you want to get rid of potatoes, pair it with green beans and corn.
But that wasn't the case.
Broccoli
Cauiliflower
Parsely
Celery
Carrots
chicken bouillon cubes
crap-load of water
egg noodles
Chop everthing up, dump everything in. It actually tasted really good! So now I made room in my fridge and didn't waste anything =)
Now here's a kicker:
I was making cream of potato soup. You can buy these cute little packets and just add milk and butter. I had it all set up, ready to get ride of my "almost bad" red potatos and..........crap, they're already spudding. K, we aren't eating those.
So I dumped a bunch of original potato flakes in, and BAM! turned it into yummy instant potatos! (After being around Emeril pots/pans I am now speaking like him)

Store etiquette
1. When you get done trying on clothes, please hang the article back up properly and put it in the designated area if you aren't going to purchase it. If you can't do this, then please don't complain if you had to wait at the checkout for 15 minutes. We just spent 15 minutes putting those clothes back on hangers.
2. Only 1 person per dressing room. Unless they are your kids, of course. That makes us feel like you are trying to steal.
3. DO NOT put your purse behind my counter and ask me to watch it for you as you do the rest of your shopping. It is NOT my job to watch it, and if I need to walk away, I WILL. Complain to my manager all you want. We are not liable.
4. I love being personal with all my customers, but if there are 5 people behind you, I really can't listen to the cute thing your kid did today.
5. If you aren't really planning on buying something, don't "thumb" through everything. We spend most of our day straightening the things that you didn't really want.
6. Be nice to an associate, and they will be nice back. Kindness goes a long way.
7. Don't ask for coupons. It isn't our fault that you forgot them and you live 50 miles away. Plan ahead. We aren't being mean, but it's against store policy. If we give them to you, we are risking our job. You're not THAT important.
8. Get off your stupid phone when you are at checkout. Vital info is being passed.
9. Show me that you have coupons right away. It's a waste of everyone's time when we have to re-do everything.
10. If we forget to take off an ink-tag, it wasn't personal. We see over 100 of them a day (each person) so if we accidentally miss one, we are deeply sorry.
11. I get 15-45 minutes for a break. If I'm on break, please ask another associate for assistance. We do a lot on our breaks, and that time is vital for us.
12. Black Friday is hectic. Yes, I understand you are cranky b/c you decided to wait outside our doors for 10 hours. But we don't get to shop at all on that day, and we just spent 3 weeks preparing for that one day, and we had to be there early too, so get off our cases.
13. If your coupon isn't eligible for something you have, tough. Read the fine print.
14. Keep an eye on your kids. Please.
15. DON'T STEAL!

No new recipes either today. I worked late last night, and when I got home we just put some t.v. dinners in.
Anyways, I think I'm going to start on my garden toadstools now.

Peanut Butter Cookies
An old lady lived in a house next door. The building should have been condemned, but the city felt too bad to kick an old lady out of her house. But once she died and the estate was settled, the next owners plowed it down. All that remains is a cute little pile of rubble that the newest neighbors graciously let me dig through (hoping that I get rid of all of it for them!)
So......I was ON A ROLL yesterday! I accomplished sooooo much! Unfortunately, all the work zapped my energy today. All I did today was start a Junior Savings account for my step-son. He's in desperate need of one. The two little ones unfortunately have WAY more money than he does, since I make weekly deposits into the accounts. So now he has one! Yay!
Anyways, enough of my babble. I want to enjoy this lovely storm coming through. Here's the Peanut Butter Cookie recipe I made last night (scratch....duh!)
Peanut Butter Cookies
---------------------------
1 stick of butter
3/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup peanut butter
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/4 flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
Peanuts or chocolate chips (or both!)
1. preheat oven to 350
2. blend everything together. you don't really need to worry about mixing the liquids seperately from the solids, but you can if it makes you feel better.
3. Drop spoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet
4. Bake 12-14 minutes. Let cool
Super-yummy! I usually make two batches of these. We love cookies in this family!
Anyways, I will maybe post pics of the patio and walkway that I made soon. We'll see. Maybe I'll do a short How-To. We'll see =)

Plaster Garden Toadstool
Plaster Garden Toadstool
-----------------------------------
I used plaster, and I will be waiting to see if it holds up to the weather, we'll see. IF NOT.........USE MORTAR OR CEMENT! It's more durable, but I'm not sure about painting it....
plaster
styrofoam cups
styrofoam bowls
tent stakes
acrylic paint
polyurethane
plastic spoon (for mixing)
1. In a styrofoam bowl, mix the plaster as specified. I personally like mine a little more liquidy to make it more even, but whatever. Pour the mixture in a styrofoam cup, stick your tent stake in the center, and let dry.
2. Once dry, peel off the styrofoam stuck to the plaster cup.
3. Mix more plaster in another styrofoam bowl, ALMOST to the rim.
4. Put your cup/stake (which is the stem, obviously) in the center of the bowl. Let dry.
5. Turn it right side up, peel the plaster off, and you should have an object that looks like a mushroom. .
6. Start painting with acrylics. BE CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH THE PAINT, EVEN WHEN DRY!
It will rub off right away. Soooo....
7. Finish it off with a coat of polyurethane to seal everything in. Let dry.
8. Stick it in the ground with the stake.
I just got finished with my cement patio for my garden bench so I can sit and watch the kids play some basketball. Once I'm done completely letting the joints settle, I will post a How-To.

Copper Windchime

Copper Windchime
---------------------------
Copper tube
Copper wire
Smaller copper wire
Fishing line
1x wood
pipe cutter
plyers
plywood
wire snips
drill and drill bit for metal
1. Cut your copper tubing at different lengths (regular intervals). I started mine at 7 inches and went up an inch each tube.
2. Drill two holes opposite each other at the end of each tube. You will use this to hang them
3. Take your bigger sized copper wire and start twisting it to make a spiral.
4. Twist the smaller wire around 6 different locations around the perimeter of your spiral. Wrap it tightly so that it doesn't move. This is for decoration and it will be the spots that you hang the string from.
5. Make a loop with the smaller wire and wrap it around the center of your spiral for a point to hang the windchime.
6. Loop the fishing line through each of the tubes and wrap them around the points around the spiral. Repeat until all the tubes are dangling.
7. I took a 1x4 board and cut it into a square, then cut each of the corners off. It made an octogon. I thought this would be much easier than trying to make a neat circle. Paint/stain/varnish it, and drill two holes next to each other in the middle.
8. I look thin plywood and made a rectangle, then cut the corners off just one side to make a "tag" shape. Then I drilled a hole through the top. Paint/stain/varnish it.
9. String some fishing line through the tag, then make a knot 6 inces up. Stick your octogon ontop of the knot, then knot on the top. Then add a bit more space (depending how how low you hung the tubes) and tie it on the center of the spiral.
****Note that on mine there are copper wrapping around the tubes. DO NOT DO THIS! I thought it would be a nice decorative touch (which it does make it look pretty) but it greatly sacrificed the sound quality. It makes a "clink" instead of a "gong". I will be changing it to the directions above. I just have to get a good drill bit.
Anyways, remember those toadstools I was going to be working on? I attempted one, and failed horribly. I will be making two of them for Mother's Day, so time is running out. So I need to figure out another way to do them. I will probably head into work early so that I can do a little shopping around for supplies and give 'er another go.
Work is giving me more hours, too. So I don't know how much time I will have to keep up with these random projects. I hope I can squeeze everything in!

Grillin'
I just soaked thin-cut chops in a hickory bbq marinade for about an hour and put in on the grill.

Still waiting
It's really rainy today around my parts, but at least I don't have to water the outside plants! Always a bright side to everything, right?
There's a few projects that need finishing (windchimes, toadstool, shutters, etc.) but I don't think I'm going to make any progress.
Oh! And my son's appt. got moved to today, so I'm still waiting to find out if there is anything wrong with my dear son. Cross your fingers!
UPDATE! ----We went to the doc's, and everything is okay! He's just a weird little boy, and I'm okay with that!

Fridge magnet, Mom tips
Beaded Flower Fridge Magnet
-------------------------------
Clay
Misc beads
Mighty Putty
Super glue
magnets
cookie cutter
1. Roll out your clay until it's about 1/2 in thick.
2. Press your cookie cutter into the clay and tear off excess clay. I just used a round jar lid for mine b/c we were originally going to do this project a different way.
3. Follow the directions with drying. Some air dry, others you need to put in an oven
4. You can do the mortar/grout way, which is messier. I had Mighty Putty sitting around, so I used that. Press the putty all over the top and sides of your shape.
5. Use a large yellow bead for the center of the flower, press down.
6. Add whatever colors around the yellow bead. My son chose purple b/c it's his fav color. Make sure to get the sides of your shape.
7. Super-glue magnets on the back. I chose the heavy-duty ones b/c with the beads, this object can get pretty heavy. Wait for it to dry and put it on your fridge!
I also made a copper windchime yesterday. I'm not satisfied with all of it yet though, so once I make the changes and hang it, I will post pictures. And I will also be starting a plaster toadstool project soon, so there will be a how-to on that also.
Tips from Brittany's Bathroom
------------------------------
Yeah I know, it's pretty random considering the content above, but I just felt like it.
Anyways....do you have kids? Remember all those random products that you used when you were pregnant or you had a newborn? Why waste them?
Palmer's cocoa butter for stretcch marks---it have ingredients that boosts elastin, right? Makes it harder to get stretch marks. Well, those same ingredients are used in almost all anti-aging creams. Instead of paying $60 on a 1-oz. jar of department facial creams (yes, they are that expensive, sometimes more), just buy a tube of cocoa butter. It's cheaper and works just as well.
Lansinoh for Breastfeeding Mothers----this is a cream that you put on your.....love buttons, lol. It heals cracks fast so that it doesn't hurt next time you breastfeed. I still use mine, but for the lips. My step-son gets chapped lips all year long, and this stuff can clear it up within 24 hours. And it doesn't have the bad taste of Vaseline.
It may sound strange, but when you have sagging skin and bleeding lips, I'll be the one laughing.
Anyways, my son's dr. appt. is in an hour. Pray for him!

Diabetes
My son has screening for diabetes tomorrow. She was showing signs, and I completely missed it. I'm really beating myself up for it. I just don't think I can handle any more bad news about my kids' health. Health scares to date:
Will--ADHD, Bipolar (though we aren't yet confirming the bipolar.)
John--Type 1 diabetes
Hailey--Down Syndrome (when I was pregnant with her---6 trips to get 3d ultrasounds for that one)
I am spending a little time with my ma, clearing my head, working on some projects, cleaning, and will be drinking. Yes....oh yes...there will be beer involved to get me through this one.

French Onion Soup
I used my 4-qt cooker for this. I got this recipe from a book, but I found that I absolutely hated the recipe, so I made my own changes. Much better.....
French Onion Soup
--------------------
1 large onion
3 tbs. cornstarch
8 cups water
8 beef bouillon cubes
salt to taste
1 cup milk or half and half
4 tsp. Worcesteshire sauce
Swiss cheese slices
toasted french bread
3 egg yolks
1. Slice your onion into rings and put them in the crock. Add beef cubes, water, and salt. Cover and heat on high for about 4 hours.
2. Beat egg yolks, stir in milk or half and half, and Worcestershire sauce. Add that to the crock, cover, and heat for another 2 hours.
3. Dissolve the cornstarch in a bit of water, pour that into the crock. Put it on low until you are ready to serve.
4. Put some swiss cheese on the bottom of the bowl, then toasted french bread, then some more cheese. Pour your soup on and wait a few minutes for the cheese to melt. Eat!
It's sooooooo yummy. I'm taking the leftovers to work today. It'll be awesome.

Work!
I haven't been to work in over 5 months. Business slowed, and they didn't need me. But they just got done firing all the full-time ppl, so I'm in business again.
And ya know what? I'm actually super-excited.
If you haven't noticed from all the advertising in my older posts, I work at Younkers. And I absolutely love it there. It's a horrible paying job, but I still love it. It's the only job I've had that I look forward to going to each and every day. Weird, eh?
So though I miss out on a day of fun, I get to once again be amongst friends, and loyal customers that I dearly have been missing.
And don't even think "it's just a crummy cashier job." It really is more than that.
Anyways, tomorrow will be an awesome day.

Mason Jar Luminaries
Mason Jar Luminaries
----------------------
Materials-
Mason jars (whatever size you want)
White/red/brown tissue paper
Decoupage medium (or you can do white glue/water)
Leaves/flowers decorative paper punches
Sponge brush
Plastic cups
I'll tell you the directions to making the exact same ones that I made, but feel free to play around with color/shapes/sizes!!
1. Rip up a bunch of chunks of white tissue paper. They don't need to be uniform. Or they can be perfect shapes. Whatever.
2. Pour your medium in a plastic cup. Start sponging your white tissue paper all over the jar. Repeat for each jar. Let dry.
3. Fold your tissue paper in half a bunch of times to get the paper thick enough so that it doesn't tear when you use your punch. Punch a bunch of the leaf pattern out of the brown paper. Sponge that all on and let dry.
4. Do the same as above, except with red tissue paper and the flower punch. Let dry.
5. Brush your medium all over the jars to really seal it in so that they can be used outdoors. Dry.
6. Put pebbles or anything heavy on the bottom for weight if you will be using these outside and leaving them there.
7. Put a candle in and enjoy!
Like I said, try out different punches, colors of tissue paper, different sized mason jars. No, you don't need to use mason jars. It works well on any glass surface. Do bowls, hurricanes, etc. I just chose mason jars b/c I wanted to have a cover on the top so that I could leave them outside and not have to worry about rain ruining the candle on the inside. Plus they have a nice country/cottage feel to them that I'm going for on the outside of my house.
NOTE--The tops MAY rust after long exposer outdoors. I don't mind, I think it will give it character. But if you don't like rust, either bring the jars indoors or try spraying it with CLEAR RUSTOLEUM!
I will post nighttime pics as soon as it gets dark!!
This luminary project just won't end
So I'm ALMOST done with the luminaries. I just need to get my flower punchout from Walmart, decoupage them on, let them set, take pictures, post, then stick them outside.
My son's windchime is done drying. I just might hang it and take pictures today.
And we will hopefully be starting our fridge magnets today. If there's enough time because...
I'm going to a banquet today! It's just for student senate, but we feel like getting dolled up to make a night out of it. Fun fun fun day ahead!
Does it seem like I've been even busier than usual? I think so too....don't get me wrong, I usually have a fun adjenda, but lately it's been so much that I don't get everything done. I'm usually so good about that! It doesn't help that I'm taking on so many different projects.
And my job is finally giving me hours again! After firing half the company, they need me back! For those that got fired, I'm dearly sorry......and MANY of you I will miss terribly. So I will be busy busy busy!
