Burlap Pillow

We're almost to the "Surprise!" I hope you guys are excited as I am! Look for it tomorrow!

But for today, I'm going to show you a simple burlap accent pillow that I made.

It started out from a peanut sack. That's right, I kept the burlap bag from peanuts.

First I washed it!
Then I ironed it flat.

Then I folded over an edge and ironed that flat.

I dry-fitted my buttons, figuring out where I wanted them. Then I cut slits (only on the folded part!) for the buttons to go through. I took a sharpy and poked it through the slits to mark where I was to sew the buttons onto the main pillow.

This is what you should have at this point...

Sew your buttons on.

Then begin adding PolyFill.

Once it's filled, push your buttons through the slots, and you have a pillow!

I love it!

Come back tomorrow for the big surprise!!
You don't want to miss this!

Jewelry Frame

I wanted a jewelry armoire for Christmas. Nope, Santa didn't deliver one to me this year.
I really needed a better way to store my jewelry than the 25 cluttered jewelry boxes that I have lying around.
So this is what I did to solve that problem:
Jewelry Frame
-----------------
You need:
-a frame (with glass out)
-craft wire
-wire snips
-staples and a staple gun

I wanted to put staples all around the frame for the wire to loop through.

APPARENTLY you shouldn't use a high powered staple gun on a thin piece of the frame....

Ooopsie! We'll have to pry that out...not too much damage, hehe!

I flipped the frame upright so that the staples would go through the thick part. Then I found my husband's file to use as a crutch so that the staple wouldn't go all the way into the wood, making it flush.

I went all the way down the line, moving my file as I went.

Then I twisted an end of my craft wire on the first staple, and began weaving.

I LOVE how squiggly the wire turned out to be. My bedroom is pretty modern, so this fit in perfectly.

This is how it turned out...

Then just add your jewelry!
Problem solved!

Don't have a modern bedroom?? No problem! You can try:
-An ornate fram with chicken wire stapled to the back
-A distressed frame with burlap on the back (but then you wouldn't be able to hand necklaces!
-A frame with lace backing
So go put your jewelry on display!

Backsplash

You guys were right! The backsplash looks better painted!
Thank you everyone so much for giving me so much feedback on that!
So this is what it looked like yesterday morning...

...and this is what it looked like last night!
I took off the wooden accent with a putty knife, sanded down the glue, added trim all the way around the backsplash, painted it the same way that I did with the cabinets, then added an awesome barn star that I scored at Goodwill for $2.39.
So now I've been thinking....should I give those cabinet windows the same faux muntin treatment that I gave my house windows?
Click the picture above to see that post.
The Lineup:
-Framed Jewelry
-Burlap Pillow
-Pillow Accent
-Island Centerpieces
-A SURPRISE!!! (if you're an infrequent follower, you NEED to be here for the surprise! I'm thinking maybe Saturday...)
-Diaper Cake

Herb Garden

Today, I'm going to show you what I did with those terracotta pots from my kitchen renovation. In case you didn't see it a few days ago, click the photo below to check it out!

First I spray painted them with a flat black paint.
After they dried, I started distressing them with sandpaper.
Then I whipped up some epoxy.
and began gluing my letters to the pot. I found these wooden letters at Walmart in the craft section.
It only takes 5 minutes to set, so you have to be quick!

Tip: spell out your words BEFORE you mix the glue. Or else you end up scrambling around like I did!

Then I took out my handy walnut technique glaze, painted it on, then wiped it off.
Add dirt, plant your seeds, and you're ready to go!

I sent my husband to a specialty store to get herbs. Instead, he went to Walmart (.........) and came back with this.
Okay, so the kit does contain packages of herbs, but I really didn't want to spend money on an entire kit. But I wasn't heading back out in the cold, so I figured out a project to use these ugly pots....
...on my next BIG REVEAL (Yep! It's already started!) No...it's not my daughter's room. These ugly pots WILL be painted, and not used for planting. You'll just have to wait and see!

The DIY Show Off

Well it happened again! I was featured at The DIY ShowOff again!
I'm SURE all of my readers are followers of Roeshel's blog, and if you aren't, shame on you!
Go check out the feature by clicking here.

I was overwhelmed by the feedback given about the kitchen. So many wonderful people!
I also had tons of feedback about the backsplash, so it's settled:
the backsplash will be painted!

Actually, I still need to install a backsplash on the other cabinets, lol.

In due time!
